Gaiole è in provincia di Siena e sta proprio nel cuore del Chianti storico. E’ un borgo antico ed essendo sulla principale via di comunicazione tra il Chianti (Siena) e il Valdarno, fin dalle origini ha rappresentato un «punto di scambio» tra i contadini al servizio dei vicini castelli e i mercanti provenienti da Firenze e Arezzo. Nel 1300 fa parte - insieme a Radda e Castellina - della «Lega del Chianti». Nel 1800 ebbe come Sindaco il Barone Bettino Ricasoli, inventore del vino Chianti [continua dopo le foto] ■

Gaiole is in the province of Siena and is exactly in the heart of the historic Chianti. Gaiole is an ancient village born on the main communication route between Chianti (Siena) and Valdarno. Since the beginning represented a «point of exchange» between farmers at the service of castles and merchants from Florence and Arezzo. In 1300 it was part - with Radda and Castellina - of the «Chianti League». In 1800 the Baron Bettino Ricasoli, inventor of Chianti wine, was mayor of Gaiole [continues after the photos] ■

La piazza del paese è il centro degli eventi culturali e di spettacolo. Sulla piazza di Gaiole si affacciano bar e locali caratteristici, attività artigianali, enoteche e negozi alimentari. Il turismo eno-gastronomico e quello ciclo-turistico sono le principali fonti di ricchezza del territorio: castelli, pievi, abazie, antichi monumenti e importanti cantine vinicole sono sparse un po’ ovunque per le colline intorno a Gaiole [continua dopo la foto] ■

The village square is the center of cultural and entertainment events. On the square of Gaiole there are characteristic bars and taverns, artisan businesses, wine bars and food shops. Fra i vari luoghi interessanti del territorio ci piace segnalarvi in particolare il borgo/castello di Barbischio, a pochi chilomentri da Gaiole. Risalente al prima dell’anno 1000, Barbischio fu il primo mercato della zona (poi spostato a Gaiole). L’imperatore Federico II donò il castello ai Conti Guidi, nobile famiglia toscana ed infine passò ai Ricasoli. La torre più alta domina la vallata verso Gaiole [continua dopo le foto] ■

Between the various interesting places in the area, we like to report the hamlet/castle of Barbischio, a few kilometers from Gaiole. Dating back to the year 1000, Barbischio was the first market in the area (later moved to Gaiole). Emperor Frederick II donated the castle to the Guidi Counts, a noble Tuscan family and finally passed to the Ricasoli. Tramite sentieri e percorsi da fare a piedi si raggiunge il castello di Montegrossi, che domina tutto il Chianti storico verso Siena da uno dei colli più alti sopra Gaiole. Dell’antica fortezza, la più importante e strategica di quest’area, restano solo le mura diroccate del cassero. Di proprietà della famiglia Ricasoli Firidolfi venne conquistato da Firenze nel 1200 e poi distrutto dall’imperatore Carlo V di Asburgo, re di Napoli a metà 1500 [continua dopo il video] ■

Through walking trails and trekking routes, you can reach the castle of Montegrossi, which dominates the entire historic Chianti towards Siena from one of the highest hills above Gaiole. Of the ancient fortress, the most important and strategic in this area, remain only the ruined walls of the «cassero». Owned by the Ricasoli Firidolfi family, it was conquered by Florence in 1200 and then destroyed by the emperor Charles V of Habsburg, king of Naples in the mid 1500s [continues after the video] ■

Vertine è un borgo/castello fortificato che sorge su una collina sopra Gaiole. Di origini antiche prima dell’anno 1000, nel 1200 divenne proprietà della famiglia Ricasoli che lo scelsero come principale residenza durante le guerre aragonesi di fine 1400. E’ abitato da alcune famiglie ed è tutt’ora racchiuso da una cinta di mura. Da Vertine si gode una bellissima vista sulle colline del Chianti storico ■

Vertine is a fortified hamlet/castle which stands on a hill above Gaiole. Of ancient origins (before the year 1000), in 1200 became the property of the Ricasoli family who chose Vertine as their main residence during the Aragonese wars of late 1400s. Vertine is inhabited by some families and is still enclosed by a wall. From Vertine you can enjoy a beautiful view of the historic Chianti hills ■
